How To Waste Time On WordPress Themes
The last couple days have been very “amusing” as I was trying to find a better theme for this blog. The current theme does not support Gravator(took me ages to find out) and there are other things that this “free” theme won’t do.
I spent too much time trying to find the best theme and lost so much time. Some of the so call free premium themes are just plain rip-off as you can’t modify the header graphics without the source psd file to put your name on instead of theirs and some of them don’t work well with certain plugins/widgets. The world of WordPress blogs is simply stunning!!
It is increasingly appearing to me that I should focus more on building a business rather then wasting time trying to learn things that I can probably outsource for $100 or so to do a top-notch job and make the blog to my liking with a real premium theme that will have the “whistles and bells”.
My believes are also being challenged today!! Questions such as “You should do it on your own” has embedded in my subconscious mind for too long that it became a part of me. I must thank all the teachers at primary and high school for all that!! Why do I say that?? Because they always taught me in a negative way that “You must do all your homework by yourself”, “It’s wrong to copy homework from others” and “You will amount to nothing if you don’t study hard enough”.
I wonder what kind of achievements my teachers back at school have achieved with those kind of believes……most likely just a JOB(Just Over Broke) until retirement age…..LOL…….
So if you’re reading this post you’re already ahead of a lot of people because you would have been taught that “you’re not meant to be wasting time browsing the net and should find a real job instead”
I shall go back to traffic generation part in a day or two. I just need to charge my battery and be the Duracell bunny again.

Nice post–like how you have the high level view here about not getting bogged down in the “small stuff” like templates and plug-ins–just staying focused on the big picture–great advice!

I just love it Dean
Not only did I contend with the school system with the “do it yourself and don’t copy” theme. It was embedded in me from my family.
Growing up poor, we “had” to do it ourselves. Grow your own food, preserve your food for the winter, build your own house, build your own furniture in some cases.
In my family if you didn’t or couldn’t do it yourself you weren’t worth your salt as my folks used to say. Plus I had an older brother that could do dang near anything which was another challenge for me.
And now that you point it out, thus far with Alex I have done everything myself. I too spent way too many hours trying to get my blog figured out.
I have to admit, however, I did ask for help in the forum. Maybe I am venturing out of my shell. Wish me luck
See you around.

Hey Hudson,
How’s it going in Sunny QLD! I have wasted a lot of time and also learnt the amazing benefits of outsourcing. I use a couple of sites to outsource now including: GetAFreelancer, eLance, and RentaCoder.
The learning curve for a lot of us in Alex Jeffreys course has been huge, so just keep going and you’ll be fine.
Cheers

Hi Huddson,
I have spent more time on choosing blog themes than I want to admit to. In fact I absolutely AGONISED over the design for my current blog.
But, that said, I would NEVER attempt to create a theme myself. I would have to spend about six months on learning to code and the same again on graphic design – and that’s a conservative estimate. Imagine spending a YEAR on getting your blog setup before you can even think about starting to write in it!
No thanks – these days if I want a new theme I’ll just see what Brian Gardner’s got on the go at Studiopress, pick the theme I like most and be done with it.

Huddson,
When I dropped by your blog, I was instantly drawn to this post – most likely by the headline. It seems like I’m not the only one to have ‘wasted’ countless hours trying to find the perfect wordpress theme for my blog. The rest of your post was spot on as well.

Hey Huddson
Good post my friend, just shows the importance of planning and sticking to a working plan
It’s SO easy to get stuck into doing something, but once you do it you soon realise how little else you got done eh !!
Must admit I do it myself sometimes, have to be a lot more strict with myself now though
Speak soon
